How Easy It Is To Take His Blessings For Granted
For many of us, it is easier to draw close to God during the hard times. A storm, sickness, or loss often drives us to our knees and His side; but when things are going well, it is so easy to neglect or forget the Lord. I have heard it said that it is often our success that causes us to falter–not our struggle. Moses warned the children of Israel about this very thing just before they entered the Promise Land. Let’s look at those verses together:
Deuteronomy 6:10-11 (NIV) When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied,
Now comes the warning in the first part of verse 12:
Deuteronomy 6:12 (NIV) be careful that you do not forget the Lord, ....
Notice how he describes good times and their being satisfied–and then comes the warning. I pray we remember that when we are saved, we are saved not of our own doing but from His abundance. We may work hard and contribute in many ways, but none of that changes the fact that God is the source of every good and perfect gift.
